England & wales cricket board
TEAM INTELLIGENCE & FAN ENGAGEMENT.
PMY developed a groundbreaking data platform for the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB), covering performance, fitness, analysis, video, coaching, scouting and scheduling data.
In cricket, talent has often overshadowed data accessibility, with many players going unnoticed due to the lack of a comprehensive digital view. Mo Bobat, (former) Performance Director at the ECB, highlighted this limitation. PMY responded by delivering a transformative solution.
We built a unified data platform that brings together performance and operational data across the cricket ecosystem. Accessible via a feature-rich mobile and web app, the platform is used by both the ECB and its County Cricket partners. It integrates data from multiple sources, including in-house systems, Opta, Ellipse, Hawkeye, iHawk, Catapult, PCS Pro, CricViz, Teamworks, and Cricket Archive, giving stakeholders a holistic view of the game and its players.
The same data platform also supports grassroots cricket. The ECB’s Claire Gooch, Head of Facilities Investment, shared that the organisation was able to handle a significant increase in grant applications while working with a reduced team. By digitising grant and loan processes and integrating them with financial systems, the platform enabled the ECB to streamline operations, resulting in the distribution of over £20 million in funding and the processing of 3,500+ applications across the UK in just 18 months.
This work is part of a wider effort to tackle some of the game’s biggest challenges: attracting new fans, diversifying cricket’s appeal, building a digital community, and championing women’s and girls’ participation.
In 2021, the ECB launched The Hundred, a bold new competition backed by a dedicated website, online store, fan app, and strong social media presence. PMY helped integrate data from The Hundred into a central data lake, providing a 360-degree view of fan and player engagement.
PMY’s partnership with the ECB showcases how data-driven innovation, paired with grassroots support, can help reshape a sport – making it more inclusive, accessible, and engaging for all.
DELIVERY OUTCOMES
Advanced Data Integration
The Unified Data Platform amalgamates data from diverse sources like Opta, Hawkeye, and athlete management systems, forming the backbone of cricket analytics in England.
Efficient Community Support Systems
Digitisation of grant and loan applications has led to an eightfold increase in processing efficiency, enabling more applications to be handled with fewer resources.
Refind Player Selection Process
Leveraging robust data analytics, the project has enhanced the player selection process, making it less subjective and more reliant on proven performance metrics.
Dynamic Fan Engagement Initiatives
The project has fostered deeper fan connections through integrated digital platforms supporting ‘The Hundred’, enhancing the fan experience with dedicated websites, mobile apps, and social media integration.
We are now seeing players being selected based on proven skills, who may have previously been overlooked because the data was not readily accessible.
