TECHMEDIA DIGITAL SYSTEMS

MODERNISING A MISSION-CRITICAL PLATFORM ON AWS

TechMedia, a PMY Company, provides digital technology platforms and managed services supporting complex customer environments across Australia.

One of its core platforms, Centre Management Emergency Override (CMEO), enables emergency messaging to be distributed across digital signage networks, overriding regular content when urgent communications are required.

The existing CMEO platform relied on a highly distributed, site-based architecture, with local Windows infrastructure deployed and maintained across individual customer locations. As the platform footprint grew, this model created increasing operational complexity, limited scalability and introduced single points of failure in a system supporting critical emergency communications.

Moving from site-based infrastructure to AWS

TechMedia modernised CMEO by moving the platform from its legacy architecture to a cloud-native environment on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The new architecture replaces isolated, locally managed infrastructure with a centrally managed, serverless platform designed to scale across customer environments while improving resilience, security and operational visibility.

The platform uses Amazon API Gateway to provide secure REST APIs for event ingestion and AWS Lambda for serverless event processing and automatic scaling. The broader architecture also uses Amazon DynamoDB and Amazon SNS to support state management and real-time emergency message delivery.

The solution was designed around four key principles: serverless-first architecture, event-driven processing, security by design and comprehensive monitoring and observability.

Simplifying deployment and operations

The legacy platform required infrastructure to scale linearly at each location. The existing design required two local Windows servers per emergency button — meaning a deployment with 10 buttons could require 20 separate Windows PCs to operate and maintain.

Moving to AWS removes the need to replicate this infrastructure at each location and provides a centralised operating model for deployment, monitoring and ongoing management.

The modernisation also introduces automated deployment, improved observability and stronger security controls, reducing the operational burden associated with maintaining individual systems across multiple locations.

Designing for resilience and scale

The new platform was designed against clear technical success criteria, including 99.9% availability, sub-second emergency response, API response times below 200 milliseconds and 99.95% message delivery success. The architecture was also designed to support more than 100 concurrent emergency activations.

These targets provide a measurable foundation for validating the platform as it moves through production operation and scales across additional customer environments.

Building a platform for continued growth

The modernisation establishes a more scalable foundation for TechMedia to continue developing CMEO without the infrastructure constraints of the legacy architecture.

By centralising the platform on AWS, TechMedia can simplify deployment and management, improve visibility across environments and more easily evolve the service as customer requirements and the platform footprint grow.

KEY OUTCOMES

  • MIGRATED A MISSION-CRITICAL APPLICATION FROM LEGACY SITE-BASED INFRASTRUCTURE TO AWS
  • REPLACED A MODEL REQUIRING TWO LOCAL SERVERS PER EMERGENCY BUTTON WITH A CENTRALLY MANAGED CLOUD PLATFORM
  • INTRODUCED SERVERLESS, EVENT-DRIVEN PROCESSING USING AWS-NATIVE SERVICES
  • CENTRALISED PLATFORM MANAGEMENT AND OPERATIONAL VISIBILITY ACROSS CUSTOMER ENVIRONMENTS
  • STRENGTHENED SECURITY, MONITORING AND DEPLOYMENT CONTROLS
  • DESIGNED FOR 99.9% AVAILABILITY AND SUB-SECOND EMERGENCY RESPONSE
  • DESIGNED TO SUPPORT 100+ CONCURRENT EMERGENCY ACTIVATIONS
  • ESTABLISHED A SCALABLE FOUNDATION FOR CONTINUED PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGED SERVICES
